Can I Train to Become a Driving Instructor?

1. Have you held a full UK or EU license for 3.5 out of the last 6 years?
2. Can you read a normal size number plate from 27.5 meters (90 ft)?
3. Have you less than 6 penalty points on your license
4. Are you free from any serious offence committed in the last 10 years?
5. Do you enjoy working with people?

If you have answered "yes" to all of the above questions then you are able to undertake Driving Instructor training with IGNITION TUITION.

Instructor Training Courses are in three parts:

PART 1

The first part of your instructor training will teach you about the theory and hazard perception elements of the course. You'll be taught how to get to grips with these subjects by our advanced learning materials and your highly qualified IGNITION TUITION instructor.

Beginning the Training Course
From the start of your course your instructor will provide all the training materials that you need, including CD-ROM-based learning aids. The learning materials include mock tests and other exercises to prepare you for the Part 1 exam, so that there are no surprises on the day.

The Part 1 Exam
Your Part 1 exam is a multiple-choice test using a touch-screen computer. It contains one hundred questions on all aspects of driving, divided into four categories. You need to gain a minimum mark in each category, as well as an overall pass mark. The test includes a hazard perception test which is similar to the one taken by learner drivers. But, as a potential instructor, you'll be expected to reach a much higher standard.

What Happens When You Pass?
Passing your Part 1 exam allows you to progress to Part 2 of the training course. At this stage you have the option to sample a couple of Part 2-level lessons before pursuing Part 2 of the course.

What Happens If You Don't Pass?
If you don't pass first time, you can retake the test as soon as you're ready. You'll be able to review your result with your instructor and discuss what further help you may need.

PART 2

The second stage of the course concentrates on developing your driving ability to make sure you meet the high standards required to be a driving instructor.

The Training Course
This part of the instructor training starts off with the instructor outlining what you can expect to cover in this part of your training. This is followed by approximately 30 hours of practical training with your instructor. The number of hours required will depend upon the individual. Before you take the test, you'll be able to take a mock exam to make sure you're fully prepared. This will be under full exam conditions.

The Part 2 Exam
This is a one-hour practical test of your driving ability, covering all types of road and traffic conditions. You'll need to perform a series of different manoeuvres and also complete an eyesight test and a series of vehicle related questions. During the drive you'll be expected to demonstrate a high degree of technical skill, anticipation and awareness.

What Happens When You Pass?
You'll progress straight onto training for Part 3. At this stage you have the option to sample a couple of Part 3-level lessons before pursuing Part 3 of the course.

What Happens If You Don't pass?
If you don't pass, you can have a further two attempts at the Part 2 exam. Your instructor will be on hand to give you advice and support, and additional training is available if you need it.

PART 3

The final stage of your training to become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) focuses on developing your ability to teach learner drivers.

The Training Programme
This final part of the course takes you through everything you'll need to do to pass the Part 3 exam. You'll be on the road with your instructor for approximately 40 hours of practical training. Again, the number of hours required will depend upon the individual. To prepare you for your exam, you'll take a mock test under full exam conditions with another instructor, so it's as much like the real thing as possible.

Applying for Your Trainee Licence
Once you've achieved 20 hours of training at Part 3, you'll have your first opportunity to start teaching and earning. You can choose to apply for a trainee licence from the DSA and then you'll be able to begin your new career. To support you while you're on a trainee licence, we would be able to provide additional hours of training if required to help you prepare for your Part 3 exam.

The Part 3 Exam
The final exam is a one-hour practical test that examines your instructional ability and technique. You'll be asked to teach learners of varying levels of competence in a role-play situation.

What Happens When You Pass?
Congratulations! You can now register as a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor. If you chose to take up a trainee licence, then you'll already be working.

What Happens If You Don't Pass?
If you don't pass, you can have a further two attempts at the exam. If you're working on a trainee licence, we can offer additional hours of training and further support.

Additional Training
To give you extra support, a package of remedial training is available to anyone who may need it. Carried out on a one-to-one basis, it is available to support you in passing either Part 2 or Part 3.
